The inspiration for this recipe came from my sister in law. On thanksgiving she had prepared a spiral ham after it was done cooking she cut the ham into little squares and put into the slow cooker for easy serving. I saw that pile of meat and instantly though of piling that ham on a bun!
How to make barbecue ham sandwiches:
- Sliced Ham
- Barbecue Sauce – I use Sweet Baby Ray’s original barbecue sauce.
- Brown Sugar – Just two tablespoons
- Worcestershire Sauce – Add a beefy tangy flavor
- Apple Cider Vinegar – This helps counteract the sweetness in the recipe
How long do I cook?
- Ham is already cooked and just needs reheating, though we want to marry the ham and barbecue flavor, so we cook a little longer to achieve that.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours without opening the lid. (Cut the cooking time down by an hour if you use thin deli ham).
What kind of ham should I use?
- Sliced ham or spiral ham – I still cut this ham into smaller pieces for easy serving.
- Unsliced ham: You will need to slice this yourself before adding it to the slow cooker.
- Thin deli ham: Cook for one hour less if using thin deli ham so it doesn’t dry out.
How to serve barbecue ham sandwiches:
- Hamburger buns: Toasting the buns will help keep the saucy sandwiches together.
- Sliced Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese is great with barbecued ham.
- Pickles: To add some crunch we love to add pickles to these sandwiches.

Excellent recipe w/sweet green relish added !
Pittsburgh style Ham BBQ uses thin sliced deli ham the thinner the better. In the actual sauce itself an 1)8 to a 1)4 cup f sweet relish can be added. As many times in my life that I have had these sandwiches never once was there a slice of cheese and pickles on it.
I agree. Nothing ever needed added.
