Why You’ll Love This BBQ Chicken Dip
This bbq chicken dip recipe couldn’t be any easier to make. I start with Sweet Baby Ray’s® original barbecue sauce, bacon, rotisserie chicken, sour cream, cheddar cheese, pepper, and onion powder. And it ends with placing the entire pot on the serving table or moving it to a serving bowl.
If you’re getting tired of pizza for game nights, this is one of those delicious crockpot recipes you’ll want to try. Not to mention, this is made with my favorite barbecue sauce, Sweet Baby Ray’s. That barbecue sauce is the perfect meld of flavors, sweet and tangy. It is so good in this Barbecue Chicken Dip, and adds tons of flavor plus the perfect amount of sweetness.
What you need
- Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue sauce: The highlight of this buffalo chicken dip is the barbecue sauce. Not to mention, you can play around with different flavors as well. We also use this barbecue sauce in our Slow Cooker BBQ Beef and Hawaiian Chicken Sliders.
- Diced rotisserie chicken: Make bbq chicken dip much easier by using precooked chicken.
- Sour cream: Add to the creaminess and flavor.
- Shredded sharp cheddar cheese: I highly recommend buying a block of cheese and shredding it yourself. It melts much better than the pre-shredded kind.
- Bacon: This should be cooked and sliced before adding into the slow cooker.
- Seasonings: Onion powder and black pepper are the only additional seasonings you need.
Variations
- Make the dip spicy by using pepperjack cheese and/or adding diced jalapenos.
- Use prepackaged bacon bits for an easy dip.
- A packet of ranch seasoning mix can be added for a pop of flavor.
Step-by-Step Directions
Step One – Add everything except 1 cup of the cheese to the slow cooker.
Step Two – Stir gently.
Step Three – Sprinkle over the remaining cheese.
Step Four – Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 hours, without opening the lid during the cooking time. Sprinkle the dip with additional bacon and green onion if desired. Enjoy!
How to Serve
- Pair it with a variety of dippables like tortilla chips, fritos, crackers, garlic bread, celery sticks, and pretzel crisps.
- Turn up the flavor by spooning generous portions of barbecue chicken dip onto mini sliders. Top it off with a sprinkle of cheese and some fresh greens.
- Transform your barbecue chicken dip into a stuffing sensation for jalapeño poppers. Cut those peppers in half, stuff ’em with the dip, and bake until bubbly perfection.
Recipe FAQs
Prep ahead and save yourself some party-day stress. Whip up the dip, pop it in the fridge, and before your guests arrive, just heat it up for a warm, gooey cheese delight. Serve it in a large bowl or keep this creamy dip in the slow cooker bowl.
After the dip has cooled, transfer any leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. When you’re ready for another round of deliciousness, reheat it in the oven or microwave until it’s warm and gooey again. Enjoy!

Very sweet. I fixed it by adding some cider vinegar and some hot sauce, but as written, I probably would not make this again.
Absolutely awful. I served it at a party and it was the only think left for the trash at the end of the night.
HI! Any clue, if doubling would I need to buy a second chicken? Also, does this transfer okay from the slow cooker to a serving dish?
I think if you use all of the chicken, 1 should be fine.
This recipe looks delicious. We’re making a batch with leftover turkey. I’m crossing my fingers it’s just as good ๐
That was delicious Sarah. Thanks for posting this recipe. If the other recipes on your blog are half as good I will end buying your cookbook.
I’m wondering how substituting Greek yogurt for the sour cream would work. Do you think the yogurt would curdle? Or, add it at the end of cooking, by stirring a little into some of the dip that is placed in a bowl; then, stir the remainder of the yogurt into the Crock Pot. This is only b/c I don’t use sour cream. Thanks.
I’ve made recipes before with greek yogurt in the slow cooker. They seem to turn to water and disappear.
Yum, Sarah! This looks so tasty. I was watching your video for it this morning. I’m loving your videos! I need to do more.
Good, A’ m fron Brazil. Thanks
