Make tater tot casserole with chicken and bacon in the slow cooker! A hearty dinner that is packed full of meat and potatoes.

Recipe Highlights
Chicken tater tot casserole is a fun change from the beef version
My version is loaded with cheese and bacon
Hearty enough to serve on its own—no sides needed
Great for easy dinners or church potlucks

Key Ingredients
- Chicken: Boneless, skinless breasts, diced
- Tater Tots (also known as potato gems): Frozen and ready to layer
- Bacon: Cooked and crumbled, divided
- Soup & Milk: Cream of chicken soup with a splash of milk
- Cheese: Shredded sharp cheddar
- Onions: Yellow (diced) and green for garnish
- Seasoning: Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper

How to make Chicken Tater Tot Casserole:
- Layer the tots and chicken in the crockpot with some crispy bacon.
- Mix up a creamy, seasoned sauce and pour it over everything.
- Top it off with more tots and a generous handful of cheese.
- Slow cook until melty and golden, then finish with bacon and green onions.

Sarah’s Tip and Variations
Swap the Meat: Ground chicken or turkey can be used instead—just brown, crumble, and drain before adding.
Soup Options: Use two cans of any creamy condensed soup—try mushroom, bacon, celery, onion, nacho cheese, or broccoli cheese.
Veggies: Add a few cups of vegetables such as frozen mixed vegetables, green beans or even broccoli.

I can’t wait to try this..sounds and looks delicious.
Making this for dinner tonight, my sister in law found the recipe on your site snd gave it to me, now I have signed up for the site and anxioofir dinner to get done. My husband keeps going into the kitchen and asking if he can take the lid off my crock pot just to get a better smell of the chiken and bacon. Will let you know how we like it. Thank you for excepting me on your site and look forward to making many of the recipes.
I want to try this recipe tonight for supper. I am a busy working mom and wondering if the same outcome would be reached if it was cooked on high?
Thank you!
Hi! It’s hard to say without testing it. I would think 3.5-4 hours on high would work, just make sure the chicken is cooked through.
Love this recipe, I’m going to try it with ground chicken this time. Because it’s going to be before I put it in the slow cooker should I shorten the cook time in the crock pot?
Yes, I would check it at 4 hours.
Do you recommend turkey or pork bacon?
Hi! Pork bacon is what I used, has a more flavor.
Thanks.
Do you brown or cook the chicken before adding?
No need to for this recipe.
Never heard of tater tots here in UK! What are they?
Do you have potato gems?
Where do I sign up? yummy. Also I have added canned corn.
I can’t wait to try this, but one question on the recipe, I noticed you say 16oz of shredded cheddar cheese and then (2 cups) but 2 cups is only 8 ounces. I mean I love cheese so I’m going with the 16 ounces but just thought I’d mention it.
Yes, thank you . 8 ounces is correct!
Hi! Isn’t there 8 ounces in one cup? So 16 ounces would be 2 cups right? By the way, I love all your recipes, thank you for always giving good content!
Two cups is 16 ounces. Each cup is 8 ounces.
It’s an 8 oz bag of shredded cheese by weight, which is 2 cups of shredded cheese by volume.
Hi Sarah.
Thanks for your many nice recipes.
I live in Denmark and unfortunately there are some stuff that you have in the states that we don’t have here 🙁
Ex. Tater tots is not a thing we can buy here. I found recipes to make my own – so that problem can be fixed 🙂 but the creamy chicken soup I’m not that sure about – and now you write that it’s condensed. I’m not sure what that means. I know we have some condensed milk in a can – but that’s is the only thing condensed I know we can buy here in DK. Do you know if that is something I can make by myself?
Thanks again.
Many greetings from Camilla.
You can make your own condensed soups. Search on Allrecipes.com. I have made mine own because I can’t have gluten and most of them contain wheat flour. They are super easy to make.
