Beans slow-cooked to perfection with brown sugar and bacon. This is my classic recipe for baked beans that I make over and over.
If I’m not making these homestyle baked beans, I make Hawaiian baked beans or land your man baked beans.
This easy baked bean recipe for your crockpot is a classic and easy recipe. Great for a weekend barbecue or for taking to a potluck.
How to make the best baked beans:
- Bush’s Baked Beans – I use the homestyle or original variety. I prefer not to use any flavored varieties such as maple or onion for they can be overpowering.
- Bacon – cook the bacon halfway (not completely done and crisp) doing this will give the beans a browned flavor but also allow the bacon to realease some of its juices into the beans.
- Barbecue – Use your favorite here. I like a plain barbecue sauce for this recipe.
- Brown sugar – I only add one tablespoon so the beans aren’t too sweet.
- Mustard – Adds a contrast to the sweet in this recipe.
- Sweet Yellow Onion – Just one cup diced will do.
- Worcestershire Sauce – this is the secret ingredient! Add a little tang to the beans
How long do I cook?
- Place the lid on the slow cooker.
- Cook on LOW for 5 hours or on HIGH for 3.5 hours.
Can I use Pork and Beans instead of baked beans?
If you choose to use pork and beans instead of baked beans in this recipe I would double the brown sugar and barbecue sauce in this recipe for they are less sweet than baked beans
How can I sweeten these without using brown sugar?
Use 2 tablespoons of one of these below:
- Honey
- White sugar
- Maple syrup
What other meat can I use instead of bacon?
- 1 lb. ground beef, browned and drained
- 1 lb. ground sausage, browned and drained
- 1-2 cups diced ham
- 8 ounces turkey bacon, sliced, cooked halfway and drained

This recipe is a keeper! I was looking for just the right recipe that didn’t involve cooking overnight in the oven the old-fashioned way (like I used to do) with a long list of ingredients. I printed this recipe back when the ingredients stated 1 TBSP of brown sugar instead of 2. In my opinion, 1 is enough. These beans have a sweet taste that is just right. I used 1 medium onion and I subbed the bacon for diced pancetta.
Thanks! I will change it back to one, and people can add another if they want after they taste.
In the description next to brown sugar it says 2 tablespoons but in the actual recipe ingredient part it says 1 tablespoon. Just wondering which one it is? Thanks!
It’s 2! Thanks for letting me know.
I added a cup of diced green peppers and left the bacon out.
If I made this with dried if I made this with dried beans, after soaking overnight, what extra ingredient would I add to the rest of the recipe.
to really amp up this recipe, add a 20 ounce can of crushed pineapple, undrained – a tablespoon of molasses would also help,,,bob
Too much onion for my taste. If I make it again, I will use only 1/2 cup onion and maybe a little less Worcestershire sauce.
Can these be frozen and for how long will they stay
What size crockpot is needed?
4-quart or larger. Thanks for asking. I will add it to the recipe. I missed this one.
You Go Deb! The beans were great, I was looking for “crockpot” baked beans and this is it!
Hi! Can I double the recipe in the same crock pot? Would the cook time be the same?
Hi! I do believe the cook time will be the same. Most of the ingredients are room temperature, so it will be fine. 🙂
