Can you cook frozen tater tots in a crock pot?
As you’ll soon see, this recipe does call for frozen tater tots. You don’t have to worry about defrosting them or precooking them because they’ll cook nicely and thoroughly during the slow cooking process. Not having to do a lot of prep work is the highlight of this tater tot casserole recipe.
Not to mention, just like any classic casserole dish, everything is put into the slow cooker and cooked together. You can also do different variations of this recipe and add different meats, extra seasonings, or even dial back on what is currently calls for.

Recipe Ingredients
- Ground Beef: You’ll need about a pound of ground beef, which will be browned prior to being added to the slow cooker.
- Bacon: 8 slices will yield plenty of bacony goodness for this recipe. They should be cooked first so you can cut them into small pieces. Save a few bacon pieces to sprinkle on top.
- Onion: I like to use white onion for this recipe, but you can also use yellow onion or sweet onion. Either way, it’ll need to be diced and cooked with the beef.
- Garlic: Minced garlic helps provide a nice flavor to the beef mixture and overall cheeseburger casserole.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Adds a nice kick of flavor.
- Cream Cheese: This is used to make the casserole mixture that will be layered between the frozen tater tots.
- Corn: Crunch and heartiness is what this ingredient adds.
- Rotel: A can of Rotel diced tomatoes with green chiles adds a bit of a kick along with a nice flavor and texture.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup: This is added to the meat mixture to create the creamy and hearty filling.
- Sour Cream: Combines with the mushroom soup.
- Cheddar Cheese: You can grab a bag of pre shredded cheddar cheese, but I highly recommend getting a block and shredding it yourself.
- Frozen Tater Tots: This is the highlight of the entire casserole!
Step-by-Step Directions
Step One – Cook the beef, bacon, chopped onion, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce in a large skillet over medium high heat until the meat is no longer pink and the bacon has crisped. (Drain excess grease if necessary.)
Step Two – Add in the cream cheese, mushroom soup, sour cream, Rotel, and corn to make the ground beef mixture.
Step Three – Heat the additional ingredients with the meat over medium heat until melted and combined. Then, stir in half of the cheese.
Step Four – Place a layer of tater tots in the bottom of the crockpot.
Step Five – Pour mixture of meat over the tater tots.
Step Six – Sprinkle with cheese, reserving a little for the top.
Step Seven – Add an additional layer with the remaining tater tots over the top of the meat mixture.
Step Eight – Then top with the remaining cheese.
Step Nine – Cook on HIGH cook mode for 4 hours or LOW cook mode for 5-6 hours. Serve immediately with toppings of choice. Enjoy!
