One of our favorite easy dinners to make is slow cooker alpine chicken. A creamy chicken dish with swiss cheese, stuffing mix and crunchy almonds!
Stove-top stuffing is a wonderful way to be creative in the slow cooker. Also, try my slow cooker turkey meatloaf, and my guide to make slow cooker stove-top stuffing.

This recipe was given to me by a mom at my daughter’s school. Her recipe is slightly different than the “swiss chicken” recipe for it has the added crunch of sliced almonds.
This dinner recipe is one we make over and over. To make it a complete meal, add a green side dish. You may also like my slow cooker chicken and stuffing recipe.
Recipe Ingredients

- Chicken – Boneless skinless chicken breasts cook up great in this recipe.
- Swiss Cheese – The sliced Swiss cheese gets put on top of the chicken layer. (We also use Swiss cheese in our Slow Cooker Chicken Cordon Bleu).
- Sauce layer – All you need is cream of chicken soup and milk!
- Stuffing – A box of chicken Stovetop Stuffing and a drizzle of butter goes on top. Stove-top stuffing is our preferred brand.
- Almonds – Don’t skip the sliced almonds; adds texture and flavor to the dish.
- {The full recipe is in the recipe card below the photos}

- In a bowl, add the cream of chicken soup and milk, whisk until smooth.
- Add the chicken breasts to the slow cooker.
- Lay over the swiss cheese slices.
- Pour the creamy sauce mixture over the chicken breasts, and half of the almonds.
- Sprinkle over the stuffing mix, drizzle over the butter and add the remaining almonds.
- Cook on LOW for 5-6 hours.

Variations
Chicken thighs can be used instead of chicken breasts; be sure to trim the fat off them well.
Do not add any additional salt for the soup and stuffing contain enough salt.
Add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard for even more flavor.
Cheese variations you can use are pepper-jack cheese, gruyere, cheddar or even mozzarella. Use what you have on hand.
Any type of stuffing mix can be used, such as the savory variety, cornbread or turkey flavor.
Don’t like almonds? You can use toasted pecans instead, or skip them entirely.

Serving Suggestions
This is a perfect meal to serve as is! Just ladle the chicken onto plates and serve.
A green vegetable such as green beans, steamed broccoli or a fresh garden salad is a perfect touch.
We love to round of our dinners with a side of parker house dinner rolls or slow cooker cornbread.

“Made it this past weekend with the thighs otherwise exactly the same. Excellent. Served it with roasted cauliflower and mashed potatoes. Big hit. Will make it again the same way. Thanks.”

I made a version of this recipe, and it was layered different which didn’t come out as good as this one sounds. The one I made made the stuffing pie mush. But it’s very tasty.
Love this recipe! I made it as written a couple of weeks ago and just loved it. I made it again last night with 2 additions. I added 3 slices of gruyere cheese to the Swiss, and added 4 slices of cooked chopped bacon on top of the stuffing. AMAZING!
Could you leave the stuffing out and serve with brown rice?
Trying this for the first time, will post the out come after supper,my family loves trying something new
Can I do three hours on high instead of 6 hours on low?
It won’t be cooked enough on low for that amount of time you could try 3.5-4 hours on high.
Is it 6 or 5 hrs? Top says 6 then directions say 5. Also will it work prepped and refrigerated overnight then put into crock to cook in the morning?
Hi Dawn. It’s 6 hours, but 5 would work too. Yes I think it would be fine being prepped the night before, but I worry about the slow cooker cracking when it’s cold, then heated up. Not saying I’ve never done it before, I just worry.
Might try using the crock-pot liners & assemble in it , store the bag and chicken mix in the fridge placed in another container then
add to the crock pot next morning
Try substituting Provolone for the Swiss cheese. I have a similar oven casserole and the Provolone is amazing. Can’t wait to try it in the crock pot!
I have made this recipe before and I add 1-2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard to it. It adds a little bit of a kick without being overwhelming.
That is a great idea. I will have to try that next time!
Is there any reason why it has to be an oval slow cooker? Mine is square
That should work just fine!
Could I use anything else in place of almonds?
You could leave them out if you want. It just gives the meal a crunch.
Walnuts maybe?
