These Crockpot Teriyaki Steaks are tender, and have an amazing homemade teriyaki sauce that thickens slightly in the slow cooker process. It’s amazing with just about any side!

We love using steak in the slow cooker. Our slow cooker steak bites, or slow cooker cube steak always has great results!

Why make steak in the slow cooker?

That’s a great question I often get – well, I do love a tender steak, and when you are buying a cheap cut of steak, it’s hard to get it tender on the grill. I buy bulk packs of sirloin steak, which is often cheaper than a roast.

Crockpot Teriyaki Steak Highlights

  • This slow cooker teriyaki steak recipe is a great way to turn affordable sirloin steaks into a restaurant-style dinner.
  • My tested homemade teriyaki sauce is amazing – you can use this on any other recipe as well.
  • The teriyaki steaks are so tender they fall apart on your fork!
  • Great for changing things up on a weeknight instead of having pot roast. We do enjoy our slow cooker pot roast, but let’s change it up once in a while.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients for teriyaki steaks on a table.

Steak: We use sirloin steaks for this – find whatever is the cheapest!

Homemade Sauce: Make my homemade teriyaki sauce with low-sodium soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Try my slow cooker teriyaki chicken for a chicken option.

Thickener: I like my teriyaki sauce to have some body, which is why we add a cornstarch-and-water mixture.

Tips and Variations

Meat Swap: You can use a chuck roast or beef stew meat instead of steaks.

Bottled teriyaki: If you want to make this recipe super easy, opt for a bottled teriyaki like Soy Vay Veri Teriyaki (we use it in our teriyaki beef recipe; it’s an amazing sauce).

Add Vegetables: Add one more of these vegetables: sliced white onion, red bell peppers, or mushrooms. Add vegetables at the beginning of the cooking time.

Make it Hawaiian: Add a can of pineapple tidbits to sweeten this recipe up.

What to Serve with Steak Teriyaki

Starch: Make this crockpot meal complete with steamed rice (or fried rice), mashed potatoes (our favorite). Or serve with simple slow cooker baked potatoes.

Other Sides: Add milk and honey corn, a side salad or an easy vegetable such as slow cooker baby carrots or slow cooker green beans and bacon.

Toppings: To add some texture and flavor, we like to sprinkle the steaks with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onion.

Teriyaki Steaks FAQs

Should I brown the steaks before adding to the slow cooker?

No! The slow cooker can handle raw meats such as steak. Keep the lid on while cooking and you will have a successful meal.

Can this recipe be doubled?

Yes! There is plenty of room in a 6-quart slow cooker to double this recipe.

How to Store and Reheat?

Store the steaks in the fridge with the sauce for up to three days, or you can freeze for up to three months. This reheats well in the microwave, just don’t overheat.

My sauce is too thin. How do I thicken it?

Depending on how juicy your steaks are or if you opt to add vegetables or pineapple, your sauce may end up on the thinner side. This is a simple fix. Simply mix another batch of cornstarch and water, then stir it into your sauce. Turn the slow cooker to high and let it thicken; this will only take about 10 minutes.

How to Video

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. sirloin steaks, any small steaks can be used – I buy a bulk pack. (about 3-5 steaks depending on their size)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. sesame oil, (find this near the soy sauce at the store)
  • 1 Tbsp. minced garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp. minced fresh ginger root, (or 1/4 tsp. ground)
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp. water

For Serving

  • toasted sesame seeds
  • green onions

Instructions

  • Add the steaks to the slow cooker. Add the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the water and corn starch. Pour over everything in the slow cooker.
  • Mix everything together, I do this by flipping over the steaks into the sauce.
  • Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 5 hours.
  • Serve with your desired sides, topped with green onion and toasted sesame seeds.

Sarah’s Notes

If you want to use regular soy sauce (not low sodium), substitute 1/4 cup of it with water.
If your sauce isn’t thick enough, add another cornstarch slurry and let it cook 10 minutes more on high.
For the best safety practices, I recommend not using frozen steaks in this recipe.
