Sarah’s Tips & Variations

  • Gravy Swap: Use onion gravy mix for even more onion flavor.
  • Add Mushrooms: 2 cups of sliced mushrooms will make the dish more heartier
  • Swap the steak: Use chuck, round steak, or even cube steak.
  • Make it creamy: Stir in a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese at the end.

My Serving Suggestions

Choose a hearty carb-loaded side like steamed white rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles to serve the steak and onions over. We also love to eat this with baked potatoes (such an easy side).

Add an easy vegetable, such as slow cooker baby carrots or green bean casserole.

I haven’t tried this recipe yet. I was looking for cheap, easy meals I can freeze. This appears to be suitable for freezing. There are no ingredients, such as potatoes and milk, that shouldn’t be frozen. I know this website contains a freezer-friendly section, but this recipe seems so easy, plus I have all the ingredients, so I’m giving it a try.

    1. Sarah Olson says:

Yes, I do think this would freeze well.

  2. Janice says:

What can I use instead of Italian dressing mix?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

An onion soup mix would work great.

I like all the reciprd but can not find the quick.shopping list

There’s a recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  3. Dianne Welty says:

Recipe calls for 6 quart slow cooker or larger. I only have a 4 quart slow cooker. Would this work okay in that if I cut recipe down? I have to do that a lot. AND this one sounds so good and easy…

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I do think it will still fit in a 4 quart!

  4. Janet says:

Would this recipe work for beef liver as well?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I wouldn’t see why not – I’ve been meaning to make a liver and onions recipe, and this may be the best way.

This went together super fast and smelled amazing while cooking. Couple things, where the recipe says 2 onions, one large will suffice if youโ€™re just looking for the flavor. I used two large and had more onion than meat.

Also, may be a personal preference, but next time I think Iโ€™ll skip the dressing mix. It was okay, but the flavor overpowered the fresh garlic, and I used a whole bulb.

Overall, perfect easy dinner and would make again with the above changes.

What a delicious steak and onion recipe! It came out perfect! Next time, I would like to try one of your suggestions of adding a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese at the end, and I didn’t try that when I made this recipe, as I wasn’t sure if “at the end” meant before or after the gravy mixture, as I didn’t want to mess up the recipe. Would it matter when the sour cream or cream cheese is added, before or after the gravy mixture?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I would stir in the cream cheese or sour cream into the sauce after cooking – melt the cream cheese in the microwave first.

  7. Deena Bombe says:

    Could you use ribeyes

    1. Sarah Olson says:

      Yes, that would work well!
