No Peek chicken is a creamy chicken and rice dinner topped with onions, I adapted this vintage recipe to do well in the slow cooker.
If you love onion flavor, also try my Slow Cooker French onion soup, Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken or Lipton onion potatoes.
Hello! I haven’t done a vintage recipe since November, and it’s been killing me. My favorite recipes to do here on the blog are the vintage recipes that I convert to the slow cooker.
The recipes I’ve seen online call this meal either “No Peek Chicken” or “Forgotten Chicken”. The reasoning for the name of “No Peek Chicken” is that this recipe does best if you leave it be in the oven without peeking, though I am using the slow cooker for my recipe, the same principle is used. I am a firm believer in leaving the lid on the slow cooker the entire cooking time for most recipes anyway.
I use minute rice in my recipe. I have not had any luck with standard rice in the slow cooker, but have with minute rice in a few of my recipes. When I dove into making this recipe I was very unsure if the minute rice could hold up to 3.5 hours of slow cooking, but it did fine! You will also love my Slow Cooker Whole Chicken and Rice Recipe.
For this recipe, I start by mixing the soups, with one can of water, garlic powder, pepper and the Minute rice. I add the rice mixture and chicken to the slow cooker, then I sprinkle on the onion soup mix. It may seem like a lot of salty things in this recipe, but keep in mind the rice and the chicken are unseasoned. I did not take very many step by step photos of this recipe because I made a video instead, scroll down a bit to see exactly how to put this meal together in my video.
Below is the dish after cooking. The chicken is tender, rice has set up and there is still creaminess to the sauce.
What do you think of this meal? I love that it’s pretty much a complete meal besides maybe adding a simple salad. Have a great weekend!

Not my favorite. Chicken came out dry, rice mushy, flavor leaves something to be desired

Flavor is great. I used a can of cream of celery in place of mushroom (I’m not a fan). Even used frozen chicken breast and it was finished in just under 4 hours. Yes the rice had a different consistency but it works for this dish. Made a side of broccoli. Have just enough for 1 lunch for my husband and I. Thank you for sharing.

We cubed our chicken and used 1 1/2 cans water. Would it be too much to use 2 envelopes of the onion soup mix? Maybe mix one in the rice mixture and one on top? I also think I would use broth vs water and add mushrooms. Served it with a side of French green beans. It really was good.

The dish seems to be pretty salty with one packet. I’m unsure if I would want to use another.
Kim says
Yes you’re probably right! Thank you

I despise minute rice. It has zero redeeming value and is simply for those too lazy to use actual rice. You don’t give any actual measurements either. This recipe is useless to me.
Sarah Olson says
Hi Shawn, regular rice does not work in the slow cooker.
Jessica says
Why can’t we use standard rice. Just curious. It seems this would be enough time to cook. Thank you.
Sarah Olson says
The slow cooker doesn’t get hot enough, fast enough to cook standard rice. It turns out gummy and chalky.
Stacy says
Three hours was even too long as one can of liquid is not enough and rice became sticky. Added in cheese and sour cream to make it more of a casserole consistency. Not sure I’ll make it again.

Quick and easy recipe but Chicken was dry and bland even after seasoning the chicken. I used instant rice and it was so mushy. Only cooked for 3 hours. Will not make again.

Delicious! I used instant jasmine rice and cut the chicken into 1” cubes beforehand. Makes for easier service. We really enjoyed it. Cook time was only 3 hours. Will make it again. Btw…I think adding broccoli or mushrooms would be good in this dish. Thanks for the recipes you share Sarah. I am one of your buggiest fans. Sixty yr old mom of three grown sons and now with a family of 10…I have been a crockpot cooker my whole married life (41 yrs this June!)

When I read this recipe, I thought about adding broccoli too. I love mushrooms and I would add both. Even cheese.
Judy says
My husband won’t eat anything with onions; would breadcrumb or panko work on top?
Sarah Olson says
I don’t think so, I apologize.

This is a favorite of mine..
Made 4 times in the last 4 months.
2 weeks ago tried it with instant brown rice , cause never ate brown rice before lol.
Both versions , thrilled with the results. Simple yet tasty.
As I am a 62 year old guy , and lousy cook 😉 that bought a Crockpot 11 months ago, love finding recipes like this.
Sites like yours , have me firing up my on a weekly basis , so…
THANKS!
Tracy
