If you love comfort food, then you’ll love this chicken and gravy recipe that I’ve been perfecting for years. It’s a staple in our house, and it may be the most requested recipe from my daughter.

Key Ingredients

Boneless chicken breasts that cook until perfectly shreddable

A blend of dry gravy mix and cream soup for a rich, homestyle sauce

Black pepper and water to round out the savory, no-fuss gravy

How to Make Crockpot Chicken and Gravy

  1. Add the gravy ingredients to a bowl, then add that and the chicken to the slow cooker.
  2. Let it cook low and slow until the chicken is tender.
  3. Shred the meat, stir, and thicken the gravy if needed.

Cook’s Notes & Variations

Since this recipe has only a few ingredients, it’s easily adjustable to suit your own tastes.

  • Turn the gravy into bacon gravy by adding 8 slices of cooked bacon (chopped or crumble). – or try my chicken with bacon and gravy recipe.
  • For a creamier gravy, stir in a 1/4 cup of sour cream or heavy cream before serving.
  • If the gravy is too (this can happen if your chicken has a lot of moisture), mix 2 tablespoons each of cold water and cornstarch, stir it into the slow cooker, then cover and cook for 10 more minutes to thicken.
  • You can add additional vegetables such as sliced mushrooms, baby carrots or onions. A 1/2 cup of frozen peas can be stirred in right before serving.
  • Add herbs (dried or fresh). Thyme or oregano are great choices.

What to serve with Chicken and Gravy:

Try one or more of these options along with the chicken and gravy, I like to think of what a diner would serve with this.

  • White bread (a thick and fresh white bread) is often used as a base for this chicken and gravy.
  • Mashed potatoes or steamed white rice is also a classic side.
  • For other sides, we love stove-top stuffing (or slow cooker stuffing).
  • Canned corn or steamed green vegetables round out the meal well.

  1. Ron Bertulli says:

Made this the other night, made the gravy from chicken stock and added mushrooms. Did not use potatoes or bread, put it over rice. The plates came back clean.

    1. Sarah Olson says:

Oh rice would be so good! Glad your family liked it Ron!

  2. Samantha says:

I am going to try this recipe for a potluck and need to try and figure out what the ingredients would need to be to serve around 20 people.

    1. Sarah Olson says:

If I was doing this for 20 I would do 4 pounds pounds of chicken. And times the gravy recipe by 3. And Cook on low for 8 hours. Let me know if you have more questions!

  3. Marina says:

Used Cream of mushroom and brown gravy. Skipped the mashed potatoes and just used dinner rolls, so delish!

  4. Sandy says:

    Recipe states 2 cups water.

  5. Rama says:

Going to try this today. I have the large container of McCormick Poultry Gravey Mix. Should I use the mix dry amount listed for 1 1/4 cup gravey , then follow your directions for liquids?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

Yes, whatever the directions say that equal out to a packet, then follow my liquid ingredients

      1. David Weikel says:

Can this recipe be used for Turkey breast 4.5 lbs

      2. Sarah Olson says:

I think so! You may need to thicken the gravy up at the end since the Turkey will have more liquid than 2 pounds of chicken.

      3. Dave Weikel says:

Thank you so much for your timely reply. I’ll use some flour. I’ll let you know how it comes out.

  6. Kim says:

I made this tonight and it was really good. I’m curious my gravy looks more yellow while the picture looks more like brown gravy……why is that?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I did use chicken gravy packets, I wonder if the brands were different, I think I used Mccormick brand. I’m glad it turned out good!

    Can you HELP me??
This is my first time visiting your blog…and I love your posts!!
There are so many dishes I would love to try…BUT
I have a 3 yr old crockpot that has never really cooked things well, which has closed my mind to so many amazing options. I love to make cassaroles and VAST amounts of soup, walking away and having dinner done is what I really want as a lifestyle for us now that we are retiring.
Is there a “best brand” or size I should look for?

    Thanks,
    Bloomers

    1. Sarah Olson says:

My favorite crock pot is a 6 quart Crock-Pot brand, with a timer that turns to warm after the cooking time is done! I use it for everything! It always cooks perfectly.

  9. Rhian says:

This sounds amazing. I want to use it as part of a Sunday roast to serve 2 people. How do the measurements change? Also how do I measure 0.87 punches of gravy etc. thank you in advance

    1. Sarah Olson says:

The gravy packets should be found in the exact 0.87 ounce packs. So just use one, and half the other ingredients as well. 🙂

  10. Kimie says:

Hey Sarah, another quick question 🙂 I’m making this again this afternoon, and I’m adding more chicken, about another lb or so (wanted some dark meat in there too) I’m wondering, does the chicken add liquid as it cooks along with the water? and should I add less water if i’m doing more chicken? I LOVE the gravy! Just don’t want it to be too runny. Thanks again!

    1. Sarah Olson says:

It does add a little liquid, but it should be fine, you can always leave the lid off for a while if it is too runny.
