Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy have tender chicken breasts in a wonderful gravy, great over mashed potatoes and white bread.
I’m always looking for an easy slow cooker recipe and this one couldn’t be easier and it’s crowd-pleasing. This is a perfect recipe to transform boring chicken breasts. Also, try my slow cooker smothered chicken, or slow cooker chicken piccata recipes.
If you love comfort food, then you will love this Slow Cooker and Gravy. This recipe uses chicken breasts which turn out very juicy in the gravy that they are cooked in. This recipe is a staple in our house; my daughter requests this meal often along with mashed potatoes and corn.
How to make Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy:
You will need these ingredients:
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts
- Chicken gravy packets
- Cream of chicken soup
- Pepper
- Water
Directions:
- In a small bowl add the gravy packets, cream of chicken soup, water and pepper. Whisk until smooth.
- Add the chicken breasts to the slow cooker. Pour over the gravy.
- Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4 hours.
- Shred the chicken and serve with desired sides.
How to shred the chicken:
No fancy tools are needed to shred the chicken for this recipe. I use 2 forks and shred up the chicken right in the slow cooker with the gravy.
Chicken and gravy variations:
Add one or more of these ingredients to the gravy at the beginning of the cook time for a fun twist:
- Herbs such as dried thyme or oregano
- Sliced mushrooms
- Sliced onions
- Cooked bacon
My gravy is thin, how do I thicken it?
If you add veggies to the gravy or the chicken breasts are extra juicy you may need to thicken the gravy. Here is my method:
- 2 Tbsp. cold water
- 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
After the cooking time is up. In a small bowl combine the water and cornstarch. Add to gravy and shredded chicken. Add the lid back on and let cook for 10 minutes or until thickened.
What to serve with Chicken and Gravy:
Try one or more of these options along with the chicken and gravy:
- Slow Cooker Mashed Potatoes
- White bread
- Canned or fresh corn
- Steamed green vegetables
- Stuffing – homemade slow cooker stuffing or Stove-top brand
- Slow Cooker Baked potatoes

Going to try this today. I have the large container of McCormick Poultry Gravey Mix. Should I use the mix dry amount listed for 1 1/4 cup gravey , then follow your directions for liquids?
Sarah Olson says
Yes, whatever the directions say that equal out to a packet, then follow my liquid ingredients
David Weikel says
Can this recipe be used for Turkey breast 4.5 lbs
Sarah Olson says
I think so! You may need to thicken the gravy up at the end since the Turkey will have more liquid than 2 pounds of chicken.
Dave Weikel says
Thank you so much for your timely reply. I’ll use some flour. I’ll let you know how it comes out.

I made this tonight and it was really good. I’m curious my gravy looks more yellow while the picture looks more like brown gravy……why is that?
Sarah Olson says
I did use chicken gravy packets, I wonder if the brands were different, I think I used Mccormick brand. I’m glad it turned out good!

Can you HELP me??
This is my first time visiting your blog…and I love your posts!!
There are so many dishes I would love to try…BUT
I have a 3 yr old crockpot that has never really cooked things well, which has closed my mind to so many amazing options. I love to make cassaroles and VAST amounts of soup, walking away and having dinner done is what I really want as a lifestyle for us now that we are retiring.
Is there a “best brand” or size I should look for?
Thanks,
Bloomers
Sarah Olson says
My favorite crock pot is a 6 quart Crock-Pot brand, with a timer that turns to warm after the cooking time is done! I use it for everything! It always cooks perfectly.

This sounds amazing. I want to use it as part of a Sunday roast to serve 2 people. How do the measurements change? Also how do I measure 0.87 punches of gravy etc. thank you in advance
Sarah Olson says
The gravy packets should be found in the exact 0.87 ounce packs. So just use one, and half the other ingredients as well. 🙂

Hey Sarah, another quick question 🙂 I’m making this again this afternoon, and I’m adding more chicken, about another lb or so (wanted some dark meat in there too) I’m wondering, does the chicken add liquid as it cooks along with the water? and should I add less water if i’m doing more chicken? I LOVE the gravy! Just don’t want it to be too runny. Thanks again!
Sarah Olson says
It does add a little liquid, but it should be fine, you can always leave the lid off for a while if it is too runny.
Ashley says
Could I use a whole chicken? If so would all the ingredients stay the same?
Sarah Olson says
It would be worth a try with a whole chicken! I’ve haven’t tried yet. Let me know how it works out!
Kimie says
I’m also really curious about the whole chicken? Did you try it Ashley? 🙂 some dark meat sounds great!!
Kimie says
This looks amazing!! Can’t wait for it to be the first thing I make in my crock pot this year! I’m wondering…I’m using an already made gravy recipe (since I can’t have gluten that’s in most mixes)…Do you know how much I would use of that? Or will it be better to try to find a gluten free mix?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
Super excited to try this!! Hopefully will be able to try this on Wednesday! 🙂
Sarah Olson says
If you can, try to find to gluten free mixes, and stock up on them. 🙂 If you don’t get the mixes, I’m sure your homemade gravy would be yummy, just add a little less liquid, for the chicken will add a lot of liquid to your gravy. Hope this helps
Kimie says
Great, thank you!! That is super helpful! And I actually found some gluten free, turkey gravy mixes…I’m sure that would work just the same right? Thanks for your help! I’m so excited I found your website. Been dying to find some good crock pot recipes 🙂
Sarah Olson says
Yes, I love turkey gravy mixes! Thanks for trying this recipe 🙂
Kimie says
Sarah, this was amazing!!! And SO easy! My boyfriend actually told me last night that it was probably one of the best meals he’s had. And I had to agree!! 🙂 Thanks for all your help and your wonderful recipes!!
Sarah Olson says
Thanks Kimie!
Gaile says
Kimie, since you can’t have gluten what did you use for the cream of chicken soup? I also can not eat any gluten but this sounds so good. Thanks, Gaile

This looks so yummy. I’m making it right now. I think I’ll post it on my blog if you don’t mind? I will of course link back to you as the originator.
Sarah Olson says
Yes, that would be fine, I’d be honored 🙂

Hi, can any leftovers be frozen?
Sarah Olson says
I haven’t tried yet, has anyone else tried freezing this with success?

This chicken was delicious and easy! My whole family loved it, even my 2 year old who has been very picky at dinner time recently. I will be making this regularly. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Made this today and my son said, “we need to have this more often, feels like I just got done eating thanksgiving dinner!” As he sprawled out on the living room floor. 🙂
