These spicy barbecue cowboy beans are a cinch to make thanks to this handy BBQ Style Cowboy Beans mix from Hurst’s HamBeens.

This is a new bean mix that will be in select retailers (including Publix) by the end of November or you can order it through Hurst’s online store. You can see if it’s available yet near you, on the store locator here.

Here is my first recipe with the BBQ Style Cowboy Beans mix and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.

barbecue sauce, package of beans, bacon, garlic, onion, and jalapenos on wooden table.

What kind of beans are in Hurst’s BBQ Style Cowboy beans?

Small red and pink beans are in this cowboy bean mix! It’s a perfect mix for barbecue beans.

What kind of flavors are in the included seasoning packet?

  • Sweetened with brown and cane sugar. It also has maple sugar (100% maple syrup).
  • Spices including hatch chile pepper, chipotle pepper, paprika, and salt.
  • Other flavors are cane molasses and coffee. See here for the full ingredient list.
two red bowls of bbq beans with cornbread on the side.

How to serve cowboys beans:

  • Cowboy beans don’t to be topped with anything like cheese or onions.
  • I serve extra jalapenos for those who like it spicy.
  • If you are serving this as a main course, serve cornbread or garlic bread on the side.

Remember these beans are fresh on the market and available at select retailers (including Publix). Or you can order the beans here. I love ordering beans from Hurst’s and adding a few extra beans that I have not tried to have ready to go in my pantry. I just ordered a box of different types of beans for my mom who loves cooking beans in her crockpot.

I am so bummed! I saw this recipe and really wanted to try it, but none of the stores in my area carry the Hurst’s BBQ Cowboy beans. So I went to Hurst’s online store, but due to the pandemic, their supplies are limited and they don’t offer that package of beans in their online store at this time. 🙁

Is there a bean that can be substituted?

    So good !!!

  3. Joanne says:

Do the beans need to soak overnight?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

No, if you cook them on high, they are fine.

  4. Margaret Smith says:

Do you add water or broth to cook the beans? If so, how much? Can they be cooked on low?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I use 6 cups of chicken broth (it’s in the recipe card). I would do 10 hours on low. 🙂
