This classic recipe for Slow Cooker Salisbury steak is tender and has plenty of gravy, goes great with mashed potatoes.
We love classic recipes like this one in the slow cooker, we also make tater tot casserole and hot roast beef sandwiches often.
Hi all! This Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak is a classic recipe that I’ve wanted to put on my website for a while.
I made a version of this with cube steak a few years ago, not only did that not turn out well, I cooked it too long and the patties were as hard as a rock. Making patties from ground beef is the way to go.
How to make Salisbury steak in the crockpot:
- Ground beef
- Crackers – Ritz or Saltines
- Eggs
- Milk
- Seasonings – salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano
- Mushrooms
- Onion
- Gravy – For a thick gravy I use cream of mushroom soup, gravy mix packets, and water (less than what the packages call for). I also add thyme for added flavor.
- Mix: Combine the patty ingredients until just combined, don’t over mix.
- Shape: Shape into four patties.
- Brown: Add oil to a hot skillet and brown the patties on both sides, no need to cook through.
- Gravy: Mix the gravy packets, cream of mushroom soup, water and thyme until smooth.
- Add: Add half of the mushrooms and onions to the slow cooker. Then add the patties and the rest of the mushrooms and onions. Pour over the gravy mixture. (full recipe below)
How long do I cook?
- Place the lid on the slow cooker.
- Cook on LOW for 4.5 hours, do not open the lid during the cooking time.
Can I use ground turkey?
Yes! Use ground turkey instead of beef and also change the gravy packets to chicken or turkey.

Your recipe sounds delicious. I am dear going to make this recipe will let you know when I make it.
Could I cook it on high?
Yes, about 3 hours would be perfect.
Can I double the recipe in the same crockpot?
Yes! should do just fine.
Ma’am, I love your recipes so much.
Excellent will surely make it again.
How could I make the gravy if I don’t have a gravy packet?
Hi Kathryn, I may not be much help besides directing you to a recipe that makes the gravy from scratch or one that uses cream of mushroom soup. Sorry I’m not much help!
Made using bison. Really good
thank you for letting us know!
I’m looking forward to making this. These patties appear to me to be regular meat patties. What is the difference between these an actual salisbury steak which is a more complex patty?
Hi, these aren’t regular patties. I did mix the usual Salisbury steak ingredients into the meat.
/what is a good substitute for the mushroom soup??
cream of celery
I did the recipe with 1 pound ground beef and 1 pound lean ground porc. I also add few spices, frozen green peas, baby carrots and lots of sliced white mushrooms with the rest of the ingredients listed. SIMPLY DELICIOUS!.
What seasonings did you add please
I live alone, so would halve the recipe, have a second meal ready to reheat … but how do i halve an egg? I tried beating it, but it’s still impossible (for me), to gauge the amount.
So, what terrible thing would happen, if i tossed in all of the egg?
I think it would be fine, maybe have to add even less milk so the patties will hold together.
I have a family of 6. I am converting this to accomodate the extra servings. Would I need to lengthen the cooking time?
I think the same amount of time should work fine.
Can u make more than 4 patties using the same ingredients?
Yes, should be fine! Kind of like meatballs.
Fantastic. Glad I found this.
This looks delicious! Will plan on making soon!
