Hi again! I have this month’s Freezer Slow Cooker meal of the month. This Slow Cooker Orange Chicken Drumsticks has the flavors of take-out but costs much less!

I start with orange marmalade, soy sauce, red pepper flakes, fresh garlic and fresh ginger. If you have never used fresh ginger in a recipe (it’s the beige root that is pictured below) don’t worry, it’s so easy to peel and mince ginger. Ginger root is very cheap, but you don’t need to waste the excess, I often put the ginger root in a ziplock bag and freeze it for later.

orange marmalade, chicken drumsticks, crushed red pepper, garlic, onion, soy sauce and ginger.

You can put this into a freezer bag for later in the month, or put it directly into the slow cooker.

I served this with steamed brown rice and sugar snap peas.

Did you have a great holiday? I did, but I am glad to be back to my routine. I should have another recipe for you up on the blog of Friday. Have a great week!

Tender drumsticks in a sticky orange glaze.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. chicken drumsticks
  • 1 cup orange marmalade
  • 2 tsp. soy sauce
  • 1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. minced ginger root
  • 1 garlic clove minced, about 1 tsp.
  • 1/2 cup diced white onion

Instructions

(note, if making into a freezer meal please follow instructions down further)

  • In a small bowl add the marmalade, soy sauce, red pepper flake, ginger root and garlic. Stir until smooth. Add the chicken and onion to the slow cooker. Pour over the sauce.
  • Cover and cook on high for 3.5 hours.

Freezer Meal Instructions:

  • Make the sauce as written above. Add the chicken and onion to a large ziplock bag and add the sauce, squeeze out the excess air. Place in freezer for up to a month. Thaw for about 24 hours before adding to the slow cooker. To cook, add the contents of the bag into the slow cooker, cook as directed above.

Sarah’s Notes

If you want to a thicker sauce, at the end of the cooking time mix together a tablespoon of water with a tablespoon of cornstarch and stir into the sauce, add the lid back on and cook for 20 minutes more.

    Hi Sarah,

How long should I leave it if I couldn’t thaw the day before?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I do 24 hours in the fridge.

  5. Daniela Fischer says:

Hey there, I am going to make this today. Curious how did you make those snow peas? I bought some, but have never cooked them before, so would love some ideas

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I steam them like broccoli. In a pan with water and a steamer tray. About 5 mins after the water starts do boil.

I sauteed mine in seasame oil. YUMMY!!

Could you double this recipe and i=, if so, what changes would be needed

    1. Sarah Olson says:

If I was to double this the only change I would make is to cook for 4 hours on high, and be sure to keep the lid on the entire time ๐Ÿ™‚

I love chicken drumsticks, and I can’t imagine how easy this recipe comes together! Looks so yummy!

  9. Kim Smith says:

Can you use boneless, skinless chicken thighs with this recipe?

    1. Sarah Olson says:

I don’t see why not! Though bone in dark meat would have more flavor.

  10. Edwin McGee says:

This looks really yummy and I will make it soon. I think, though, that I’ll make it with boneless thighs to make it easier to eat.

    Thank you, again.
