Can I cook steak in a slow cooker?
Short answer, absolutely! When you cook steak in the slow cooker, you can pretty much guarantee more savory and tender meat. You may have heard that it is better to sear steak before putting it in a crock pot, but this only speeds up the cooking time. In some cases, it can also add a caramelized flavor. You can even make Slow Cooker Tri Tip, or Slow Cooker Steak Bites.
With all the ingredients in this recipe, you won’t have to worry about there not being enough liquid or flavor. Crock pot steak is super easy and delicious comfort food and is sure to become a family favorite! This is one of those slow cooker meals that will be one of your most favorite recipes.
Recipe Ingredients
- Steak: Sirloin steak that is cut into cubes.
- Red Potatoes: These small potatoes cook perfectly without getting overly mushy.
- Corn on the Cob: If you can grab some fresh corn from the local Farmer’s Market, even better! You’ll only need two to three as they’ll be cut into half or thirds. You may also want to try my slow cooker corn on the cob recipe.
- Butter: A must-have to cook the steak, corn, and potatoes and to help mix the seasonings while slowly cooking.
- Seasonings: Garlic, thyme, salt and pepper, onion powder, rosemary, and paprika combine to create a tasty flavor.
Step-by-Step Directions
Step One – Add the halved corn to one side of the slow cooker.
Step Two – Add potatoes to the other side.
Step Three – Add the cubed steak in the middle.
Step Four – Add the melted butter, chopped garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, rosemary, and onion powder to a small bowl. Mix until well combined.
Step Five – Pour the seasoned steak seasoning mixture over the steak, potatoes, and corn.
Step Six – Cook on LOW for 5-6 hours or until the potatoes are tender.
Variations
- You can switch up the cut of steak you use (see options below in FAQs).
- If you’d like a gravy to pour over the steak and potatoes, consider whipping one up with onion soup mix and beef stock. To make it thick, add a cornstarch and water mixture until you get the desired thickness.
- Adding more vegetables is another great idea for making this meal even more hearty. Carrots, broccoli, and sliced bell pepper are just a few that pair well with this steak and potatoes meal.

- 4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper

- 1 tsp. thyme
- 1/2 tsp. rosemary
- 1/2 tsp. onion powder
Instructions

- In a small bowl melt the butter in the microwave, this will take about 30 seconds.

- Spoon this over the steak and potatoes. It's better to spoon it over instead of pouring for the garlic cloves will all end up in one place if you pour.
- Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 5-6 hours or until the potatoes are tender. Serve with the garlic butter sauce from the slow cooker over everything.
Sarah’s Notes
- Steak too expensive? You can use beef stew meat instead. The slow cooker will help break down the tougher cut of meat.
- No cooking spray is needed since there is so much butter in this recipe.
- The steak, potatoes and corn can be stored in the fridge for 3 days in an air tight container in the fridge.

Hi Sarah,
I am in the process of making the slow cooker steak, potatoes and corn recipe. I used a 1/2stick of butter and the rest of the herbs. If I feel like I need more of the sauce, any suggestions?
You can add more sauce if you want. Though the meat will render some of the juices and there will be more sauce after it cooks.
Can I cook on high for half the time? Iโm starting it kind of late..
That will work great!
Excellent and oh do east! I used lamb stew meat instead of beef and it was wonderful.
I made this for us on Saturday. It was wonderful. We had leftovers as well. Thank you.
Very good meal! I used stew beef .
I will do this year thanksgiving day thanks.
This meal was great!! Will definitely make again. Very flavorful.
Wow, my kind of dinner. Many thanks. I hope using slow cooker liners will be OK for this one.
Yes, liners work great for this recipe.
Could you use the frozen mini ears of corn without adding cooking time?
Yes, the same cooking time will work great.
Hello Sarah, I want to cook Country Style Ribs with sliced baby yellow potatoes, onions, mushrooms, bell pepper, zucchini, and squash using salt, pepper and cumin, and extra virgin oil in the slow cooker. Then I want to freeze it and be able to make Crispy Vegetables in the oven with it at a later time. I do not know how to cook it exactly, I have a little idea but I donโt know how. Can you give me your input on this recipe? You are the Magical Slow Cooker Mastermind. I am hoping that you could tell me what to do so I could make it tomorrow. My Refried Beans came out great! I used a stick of margarine as you do yours. Is this even possible?
Sounds like a great slow cooker meal (I would cook on low for 7 hours, but add the zucchini and bell pepper in the last hour). Though, I think the vegetables other than the potatoes are going to be far too mushy to ever crisp up in the oven. Onions, mushrooms, bell pepper, and zucchini get VERY soft in the slow cooker and will turn to mush after being frozen and thawed.
