Notes
Variations
Add or substitute other beans: Pinto beans and garbanzo beans make great additions or substitutions for a chili recipe like this.
Substitute: Fire-roasted tomatoes for the can of regular diced tomatoes.
Additional herbs: Although herbs will change the flavor just a bit, a complimentary herb to add would be a bay leaf at the beginning of the cooking time and perhaps a 1/4 cup of finely minced cilantro right before serving into the entire pot.
Toppings: classic chili toppings are tortilla chips, shredded cheese, chopped green onion, sour cream, and avocado.
Can I make this into a freezer meal?Yes! This chili can be prepped and made ahead of time, cooked, and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. It is ideal if you want a hearty meal on hand without the extra prep. Can I make this spicy?Adding a can of diced tomatoes and green chiles will add a bit of spice; however, throw in a few dashes of red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, and/or if you'd like more cayenne pepper. Jalapeno slices are another great topping option that is sure to add a bit of a kick.
